They tend to be champions of equality and can be devoted, even to the grave, to their brothers and sisters. They see superiority and subordination as something outdated, and they do what they themselves consider right, and right is whatever doesn't repeat itself. Of all the types, they are the stingiest and most reserved. They take more risks than other types, even at the cost of getting burned more often. Their food is excitement and danger. ISTPs often handle tools and machines of any kind very well, especially weapons. Just as they leap into action on a sudden impulse, they can withdraw from it just as unexpectedly, the sole reason being "it's not fun anymore." ISTPs can come across as loners, living in a kind of often imaginary community of people like themselves. Their spirit is oriented more toward craft than science; they're interested in how and why things work, and school is worlds away from what ISTPs consider essential. At work they excel at anything that tests their intelligence, courage, and skill. They tend to make idiosyncratic leaders, with a style that is hectic, blunt, undiplomatic, and unorthodox. Women of this type become stubbornly determined professionals, and it's hard for them to find a partner. Their extreme realism, their ability to quickly perceive and process enormous quantities of information, and their sense of perfection and flair give them a kind of sixth sense for grasping the exact right moment to surprise, to sense an opponent's weak spot, and to exploit it cunningly. They don't understand that a person doesn't actually have to do a particular thing in order to understand it. Sometimes it's hard for them to praise someone, and they take pleasure in analytical procedures. Their orientation toward action keeps them from thinking ahead. They can work independently and don't need supervision — in fact they can't stand it; they are flexible and adaptable, and easily cope with unexpected events. An ISTP is difficult to manage and finds it difficult to manage others; it's hard to find the right place for them, but in whatever suits them, they are unsurpassed and irreplaceable.
