E – Extraversion S – Sensing F – Feeling J – Judging
Very sociable individuals who are said to truly flourish in contact with others, and who tend to idealize whoever or whatever happens to be the immediate focus of their favor. They're able to be attentive to both practical and human details. Men of this type have a far smaller need to be firmly in the saddle, hold the reins, and keep things under control. In these personality types, traditionalist, stabilizing tendencies meet caring and sensitive ones. They're attentive to the needs of others and spare no effort to satisfy them. They are keepers of tradition in the best sense of the word.
If isolated from people for a while, they feel uneasy, almost as if imprisoned. They tend to succeed in jobs that involve a lot of dealing with people, where they can be of service and help. They tend to be orderly employees who respect their superiors. They handle matters without delay, efficiently and professionally. If they lack the feeling of being useful and liked by others, or believe they've caused some misfortune, they can slide into depression bordering even on self-destructive thoughts. They tend to express pessimistic expectations about how things will turn out. They find it hard to admit to problems with people or matters that matter to them, and they have difficulty coming to terms with their own mistakes in this area. Women often turn down promotion offers and leave them to men, even in professions dominated by women (education, healthcare). Men don't shy away from competition and advancement. In male company they may let their masculinity show, but in the presence of women they can behave by the book down to the last detail. They understand that success means adaptability and flexibility.
Their strengths as managers vary — they're careful, punctual, orderly, responsible, and their devotion to work leads people to say they have a "marriage to the company." People sometimes tend to take advantage of their willingness and trust. In difficult situations they tend to back down. If someone raises their voice at them during a heated discussion, or simply disagrees, ESFJs take it as a clear sign of hostility. It's important for ESFJs to come to terms with the fact that disagreement or conflict is normal. They should learn not to avoid conflicts, but to resolve them.
