These are individuals who tend to stay in very close contact with reality. A sober-minded approach to everything they deal with is characteristic of them. They're proud of the fact that they can't be "talked into" anything, and that they don't fall for just any advertisement or campaign. They like activities in which they can immediately see some tangible results. They tend to be administrators rather than natural leaders or heralds of new ideas. They feel comfortable in environments where things are done the way they're supposed to be done — in a word, correctly. They tend to be loyal to the institutions they belong to. Because of their reliability and predictability, they tend to be promoted and end up in top positions. They're very good at selling their skills and strengths, and at a good price. They tend to be sociable, don't avoid parties, celebrations, and other events, where they converse easily and lightly. They make no secret of their opinions on this or that, often without anyone having asked for them. It can happen that they're not sufficiently attuned to the views and feelings of others. They have little patience for those who don't pay sufficient attention and care to the details of a task that, in their view, clearly follow from the experience and knowledge of those who performed similar tasks before them.
They tend to feel comfortable in traditional, ideally recognized and respected institutions. They honor hierarchy. They accept that the host or leader of a given team is the boss in that environment and readily submit to their instructions. That, however, doesn't stop them from demanding subordination from those same people at the next opportunity, perhaps a few hours later, once the roles are reversed. For ESTJs, though, this is logical and entirely morally consistent behavior, with nothing personal in it. For them, superiority and subordination, authority and power, are not derived from people, but from roles and from the system.
However much they like continuity, they thrive above all in a dynamic and competitive environment, where their somewhat masculine tendencies can show and be put to use. Outwardly, mainly verbally, they'll protest and argue, but in the long run they respect whoever forces them to it through unquestionable authority. This constant testing drives their subordinates, and more than a few unprepared superiors, to the brink of despair. But what ESTJs are essentially testing is whether they can truly rely on their people, bosses included — whether these are people in the right place.
